As we settle into our townhouse, we’re really starting to notice all the gaps in our furniture. Moving from a smaller apartment will do that to you. I’m not really interested in buying new furniture, for both financial and environmental reasons, so I’ve started getting familiar with the local thrift stores and have found some fantastic stuff already. I’ve been surprised by how reasonably priced low-end antique stores are, too.
I know that you folks on the far-flung interwebs probably aren’t stopping by the Manassas, VA, Goodwill anytime soon. I’m going to start sharing what I find, though, to give other people some encouragement to check out their local secondhand shops and see what’s out there.
Over the weekend I drove down to North Carolina for my younger sister’s baby shower. She’s adorable, the shower was fun, and I got a little time to browse the local thrift stores too. I generally hit the Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Habitat Restore every time I’m down, but I didn’t find much there this time. (I did find a beautiful little metal birdcage-thing, so I’ll post a photo when I take one.)
I also stopped at a little antique store in Longview, NC, on a hunch and found two gorgeous and fantastically cheap chairs ($40 each). Yay! That finishes out the living room furniture, and gives me a chair for the bedroom too. The upholstery is in pretty good shape, so they won’t need reupholstering just yet.
They’re currently sitting in my mom’s basement. I could have taken one back in the Mini, but I sort of like being able to see out the rear window, so there they’ll stay until we can drive them back up here.
